The Entry-Level Experience Is Changing

Many early-career employees traditionally develop expertise by performing routine tasks: writing first drafts, conducting basic research, preparing spreadsheets, documenting processes, and answering common questions. These tasks may now be partially automated.

So, you're probably asking yourself: What happens when AI does the “starter tasks”? The answer is that it creates both an opportunity and a challenge. AI can help new employees become productive faster, but entry-level workers will also need to be intentional about learning why the work is done, not simply how to get AI to do it.

If AI produces the first draft, you still need to learn what makes a good draft. If AI analyzes the data, you still need to understand the underlying concepts well enough to recognize when its analysis is wrong.

Domain expertise — understanding a field well enough to recognize good and bad AI output.

Adaptability — continuing to learn as tools and workflows change.

AI Won't Affect Every Career in The Same Way

It’s important to remember that AI won't affect every career in the same way. Its impact will vary by occupation, industry, organization, and even the specific responsibilities of a job. Some tasks are well suited for automation, while others depend on hands-on work, human relationships, professional judgment, creativity, or accountability.

A nurse, teacher, software developer, accountant, architect, journalist, and electrician may all use AI, but in very different ways. AI might help one professional analyze information, another develop ideas, and another automate routine administrative work.

For students, the goal is not to predict exactly what your future job will look like. Instead, focus on developing the knowledge, skills, and adaptability to keep learning as AI changes the tasks and expectations within your profession. Your ability to learn and adapt may be one of your most valuable career skills.
