What is Panopto?

Panopto, the academic content capture system at Butler University, allows you to create course content using your webcam, screencasting, and external devices like doc cams. Panopto has several components, including:

For recording, Panopto can be installed directly on your computer, used from a browser, or added to a mobile device. Faculty at Butler use Panopto to flip the classroom, introduce complex concepts, record lectures or other in-class activities, and more. Students are able to record their work, activities, and competencies using Panopto. Panopto integrates with Canvas and provides playback for all computer platforms and mobile devices.

Difference between Panopto and Zoom

Simply put, the primary difference between Panopto and Zoom is that Panopto is used to create recorded content that will be watched (and rewatched) at a later time. These interactions are typically referred to as asynchronous (non-live). On the other hand, Zoom is typically used for live interactions with people who cannot be in the same physical location at the same time. These interactions are typically referred to as synchronous (live) interactions. Zoom allows you to share and control screens remotely as well as record meetings. Panopto at Butler

Panopto was first introduced to Butler in 2009 as a solution for capturing students demonstrating proficiency in the College of Pharmacy and Health Science (COPHS) and interacting with clients in counseling and speech therapy sessions in the College of Education (COE). This worked so well in COPHS and COE that Panopto is now the recommended solution for the recording of all academic content. To date, over 60,000 recordings of academic content have been made using Panopto for lecture capture, student presentations, flipping the classroom, learning modules, demonstration of proficiency and more! Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Butler faculty and students have increased their use of Panopto. During the pandemic, faculty and students recorded 500,000 more minutes and 10,000 more videos than in years prior.

Additionally, the number of minutes viewed increased from two to three million minutes in 2018 and 2019 to over 6,000,000 minutes viewed in 2020.
